Music Notes, July 2012
THIS MONTH: Our Featured Artist is this month guitarist Dominic Miller. Besides being a wonderful solo artist in his own right, Dominic is perhaps best known as being Sting’s guitarist for over 20 years–both in the studio and on the road. Also in our MUSICMAKERS section, first we’ll delve a little bit into the blues…with a nice little feature on the great blues legend B.B. King, and a piece with Canadian guitarist Sue Foley. After that, it’s a very interesting segment on the tabla drum with Indian classical music master musician Shafaatullah Khan.
Our Featured Festival this month is the Richmond Jazz Festival at Maymont, in Richmond (VA), USA. Now in its 3rd year, it continues the tradition of featuring a diverse and eclectic mix of featured guests. Also, mark your calendars! As a heads-up for the Fall, be sure to check out our brief profile on the Jazz At The Lake Festival on our Festivals page. Now in its 29th year, this mid-September festival takes place in the quaint little Adirondack town of Lake George, NY…about an hour north of Albany. If you’re a serious music lover, and have an appreciation for important International jazz, this is a festival you certainly don’t want to miss!
STUDIO JAMS MUSIC CLUB: This month in the Club: an intimate 30-minute MUSICLAB session with legendary jazz pianist Joe Sample, hosted by bassist Gerald Veasley. Plus, more songwriting tips – this time from Larry Hoppen (the voice behind the mega-hits “Still The One,” “Dance With Me” and “Love Takes Time” from the band Orleans). You’ll also get a nice little lesson on playing funky rhythm guitar from seasoned Nashville veteran Chris Rodriguez. As usual, there is another complete episode of Studio Jams to enjoy – this time it’s Episode #12, with Grammy Award winning trumpeter Terence Blanchard, pianist Bobby Lyle, guitarist Lionel Loueke, bassist Chico Huff, drummer Kendrick Scott and percussionist Edgardo Cintron. Plus, two more free unreleased Studio Jams “Bonus Tracks” for you to download. So, it certainly does pay to become a member of this hip, new music community. The STUDIO JAMS MUSIC CLUB is a “members only” club, with an annual membership fee of just $24. There is a FREE PREVIEW from the STUDIO JAMS MUSIC CLUB page on this site. Don’t miss out – join the club…TODAY!
