This episode of Studio Jams was a bit different from so many of the others. Different in that the music leaned hard in the Brazilian direction – rhythmically strong and always interesting. This was due in large part to percussionist Nanny Assis, who made the trip to Syracuse from his home in New York City to participate in the session. Joining us on piano was John di Martino, one of the finest piano accompanists on the scene today. This was great because, for only the second time in the history of the series, we chose to feature a female vocalist. Once again, that vocalist was Janis Siegel, a founding member of The Manhattan Transfer and a 9-time Grammy Award winner. Rounding out the group were Leo Traversa on bass and Jeff Stockham on trumpet and flugelhorn. Leo also made the trip up from New York City for the session. Jeff, based there in Syracuse, was somebody I have wanted to include on a session for quite awhile. We tried to make it happen a couple of times in the past but our schedules didn’t align well enough. So both of us were pleased that it worked out well this time

We taped this session at SubCat Recording Studio in Syracuse, NY (USA). Knowing that Syracuse was the hometown and birthplace of legendary songwriter Jimmy Van Heusen, Janis suggested we start the session by playing one of his songs, “All The Way.” We recorded two wonderful takes of this classic standard. Then it was time to go Brazilian. Per the dual suggestions from both percussionist Nanny and pianist John, the group proceeded to work, with extended rehearsals, through three Brazilian songs…“Aquelas Coisas Todas” (by Toninho Horta), “Ara” (by Joao Donato) and “Voce e Eu” (by Carlos Lyra)…each so beautifully sung by Janis Siegel.

The chosen material and the musicians truly made this quite the memorable session. If you are a lover of Brazilian rhythms and outstanding jazz vocals, this is a session you will absolutely love.
And what a “happy day” it was. Yet another great – and very fun – day for Studio Jams!
